Are you one of the millions that suffer from sinus infections? Looking for a sinus infection remedy? If so, I have great news – well… at least for some of you. I used to suffer from sinus infections as well. Sinus infections are thing of the past for me… thanks to what I am going to share with you today.
In my never-ending quest to cure what ailed me, I have studied many natural remedies that are backed by science. One discovery, in particular, is the ability to destroy sinus infection using very inexpensive items; probably things you already have in your home. It sounds too good to be true, but I assure you that it’s not.
I stumbled upon this jewel by researching ancient remedies along with some simple self-experimentation back in the early 2000s (2003). For years, I had tried so many things to cure my chronic sinus infections – nothing worked. I even considered surgery but I knew I would be forced to take antibiotics if I did. That didn’t work for me. So I set out to find a cure and I finally did. One day, my sinus infection had come back in full force. It was killing me. It felt as though the bacteria were eating the insides of my face. I had had enough. It motivated me to finally finish the solution I had been working on and I began using it. I haven’t had a sinus infection since.
Initially, the solution was very complex; too many ingredients. It worked okay but it wasn’t what I had hoped. I tried recipe after recipe until finally, I took Occam’s Razor at face value (the simplest answer is probably the right one). So I simplified the solution and increased the main ingredients. It worked better than I could have ever hoped for. So and I shared it with a few friends who also suffered from similar conditions. Not only did it work for me, but it worked for them too. So I shared it with a few more people. I found out that a few loved it so much that they had shared it with their friends. The word began to spread but I wanted to help more people. A few years later, I made a video. The comments have been great! People said things like “The best sinus remedy I have ever done” and “I also have been troubled with sinus problems, and yours is the best solution.” That’s pretty encouraging so now I think it’s time to share it with the rest of the world. And no… I’m not charging for it. Although… I probably could.
Let’s get some terms out of the way first. A sinus infection is medically known as rhinosinusitis (rhino-sinus-itis). This happens when your nasal cavities become infected by something. Usually, this sinus infection is accompanied by a feeling of being swollen or having extreme inflammation in the sinuses. In other words, it’s not a good feeling. It can also come with a lot of colored mucus, difficulty breathing through the nose, and so on. It’s a horrible mess.
Sometimes, a sinus infection is caused by a virus. That’s the bad news. If it’s viral, your body is just going to have to figure out a way to fight it off and these kinds of sinus infections can last a week or two. The good news is that you can prevent a secondary bacterial or fungal infection by using the technique I am going to provide you in this article. And… it might even help fight the virus itself.
In other cases, a sinus infection is caused by fungus. There are actually four types of nasal fungal infections; one which is common outside of the United States, one that is primarily found in immunocompromised patients, one that is caused by trauma to the sinus region, and Allergic Fungal Sinusitis which is believed to be an allergic reaction to environmental fungi dispersed into the air. Great news… the remedy I am going to provide will help considerably in these cases as well.
Finally, there are sinus infections caused by bacteria. Surprisingly, bacterial sinus infections are less common than viral sinus infections. However, it is often very difficult to tell the difference because they both share common symptoms, and sometimes the viral turns into the bacterial because bad bacteria multiply in the fluid-filled sinus pockets. YUMMY!
Regardless, the remedy I am going to provide here will help clean the nasal passages and reduce the chances of a co-infection while beating back the original infection. The best part about it is that it is cheap, easy, good for you, and has few (if any) side effects.
Let’s get to it…
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MIXTURE:
- Purchase a nasal irrigation kit. This kit will include pre-mixed saline packets (or you could make your own if you wanted to). You want a bottle type irrigation kit if at all possible. The pressure capabilities with the bottle are helpful and a big part of why I believe this works.
- Purchase some 10% povidone-iodine – or go to your first aid closet and get it from there.
- Boil some water and let it cool. You can also heat up some distilled water. The point here is to ensure you have clean water without the possibility of contamination from an old pipe or tainted water source. If you boil the water, LET IT COOL. You want the water to be about BODY TEMPERATURE before use. DO NOT USE HOT WATER!
- Mix the water and the saline salts into the irrigation bottle first and do so according to the instructions in the kit. Make sure the salts are melted completely.
- Put a few drops of iodine into the bottle and shake for a good mixture. The water will turn a yellowish color. This is normal.
NOTE: The more iodine you put in it, the stronger the remedy will be. However, the more iodine you put in, the more likely it will sting when you irrigate. BE CAREFUL! Work your way up to higher doses.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
- Stand over the sink or in the shower and squirt the saltwater into each side of your nose. Aim the stream toward the back of your head, NOT the top of your head. This lets you spit some of the saltwater out of your mouth.
- The first time you do this, it may be uncomfortable. The first few times I did it, it was for me. Some people will notice a mild burning feeling the first few times they use the mixture. This usually goes away in a few days and you learn to love it.
- Plan to rinse the nose with the mixture 2 to 3 times each day and do so for no less than three days after your symptoms have gone away.
Why Does It Work?
The salt rinse alone is awesome. Salt or salty solutions can draw water out of bacteria through their cell membranes and this dehydration can reduce or prevent the chemical reactions they rely on to live and reproduce. So you can imagine how this might work in your sinus cavities. Adding to that fact, Ear Nose and Throat Specialists say that “when you rinse your nose with this salt water and baking soda mixture, it washes crusts and other debris from your nose. Saltwater pulls fluid out of the swollen membranes of your nose. This decongests the nose and improves airflow. Not only does this make breathing easier, it helps open the sinus passages. Studies show that this mixture of concentrated salt water and baking soda (bicarbonate) helps the nose work better and moves mucus out of the nose faster.”
So yes… saline water is awesome! That being said, you should know that the kicker in this remedy is the iodine. I have written about the benefits of both iodine and salt in my book but iodine is seriously the powerhouse in this remedy. Let me show you why.
Bacteria – Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic for topical application in the treatment and prevention of wound infections. It’s used in hospitals all the time to prevent infections. This… you probably already knew. What you may not have known is that povidone-iodine exhibits long-lasting antiseptic effects due to its slow absorption via the soft tissue. This means it’s perfect for fighting bacteria and this is specifically why I thought it would be great in the nose. Use in nasal passages was eventually demonstrated in a study published in 2015.
Viruses – Studies have shown that povidone-iodine has an antiviral action while not affecting the cell hosts. In fact, povidone has a very wide virucidal spectrum, covering both enveloped and nonenveloped viruses, such as adeno-, mumps, rota-, polio- (types 1 and 3), coxsackie-, rhino-, herpes simplex, rubella, measles, influenza, and even the dreaded human immunodeficiency viruses. BOOM!
Fungus – Iodine is a great antifungal. Studies have shown that when povidone-iodine comes into direct contact with the fungus, it will kill it and prevent further growth. This is even true for sensitive tissues like the ear. The trick is keeping the iodine on the fungus for more than a few seconds. This is another reason why the slow absorption rate is such a big benefit.
As you can see, this remedy is near perfect. Give it a try and see what you think. Then… enjoy your newfound ability to breathe. I’ll post my old video below for demonstration purposes. I sure hope this helps you as much as it has helped so many others.
For an additional boost between rinses, take a Q-Tip and soak it with the povidone-iodine. Then, paint the inside of your nostrils liberally.
If you want to keep the infections away forever, do maintenance flushes every other month or so.
Also, avoid antibiotics if at all possible; they don’t work on viruses and fungus anyway.
UPDATES: It seems that this protocol has really taken off. Since 2015, I have since seen clinical trials, scientific papers, and various renditions, all promoting the use of this protocol. All this to say… it really does work! Give it a shot so you too can join the ranks of those who can breathe again!
