Nature’s Intent treats nutrition like a detective story. The premise is simple: our bodies were shaped over millions of years to eat as omnivores, and most chronic disease is behavior-related, driven by foods we were never built to process. The evidence is scattered across the nutrients we struggle to get, the foods that carry them, and the foods that quietly rob us of them. Gather the clues and a clear picture of how we are meant to eat emerges.

Cause, not effect

One approach to health stabilizes the patient and manages symptoms; another asks why the symptoms appeared. Both matter, but they are different jobs. Most physicians train for acute illness, not chronic, behavior-related disease, and when a dietary cause meets a purely pharmaceutical response, the behavior goes uncorrected. This tool sits on the cause side.

Clue 01 · The deficiency trail

The nutrients people most often lack, and the foods richest in them, point in one consistent direction. Start with glutathione, the body’s master molecule, and the trail begins.

The master molecule and its cofactors

Glutathione, built from glycine, cysteine, and glutamate, is the body’s master antioxidant. But building blocks are not enough: synthesis stalls without the right cofactors. That is the recurring lesson here. Nutrients work in pairs and chains, and the best sources cluster in the same few foods.

The nutrients people most often lack share one trait: their best, most bioavailable sources are animal products and, secondarily, fruit. The same foods solve deficiency after deficiency.

Built from glycine, cysteine, glutamate: bone broth, organ meats, eggs, poultry, seafood.
Master antioxidant; regulates free radicals rather than eliminating them.
Vitamin D3
Sunlight primarily; trout, salmon, sardines, eggs, beef liver.
A prohormone for immunity, bone, and brain. Pair with K2.
Zinc
Oysters, crab, lobster, red meat, pork, chicken.
Immunity, healing, brain. Legumes hinder its absorption.
Sulfur
Cod and seafood, beef, organs, eggs, turkey, dairy.
Connective tissue, detox, and a glutathione precursor via cysteine.
Vitamin B12
Clams, beef, eggs, milk, yogurt, fatty fish, organ meats.
Nerves, red blood cells, oxygen transport. Requires a healthy gut.
Iodine
Cod, tuna, shrimp, beef liver, dairy, eggs.
Thyroid, metabolism, cognition. Goitrogens in cruciferous veg block it.
Magnesium
Mackerel, tuna, salmon, shrimp, dark chocolate, avocado, banana, papaya.

Clue 02 · Live food versus dead food

Our instincts recoil from rotting or lifeless food. Processed, fortified, and preserved “zombie” foods that never decay are nutritionally dead. Nature’s signal is hard to miss: fresh is best, and what we eat, we become.

Eat like an omnivore

The human gut is a hybrid, neither a herbivore’s nor a carnivore’s. Omnivores eat some plants, not all. Whole fruits pay off: carbohydrates bound to fiber, water, and antioxidants that feed the microbiome. Cultivated vegetables and grains cost more than they return, defending themselves with anti-nutrients (lectins, goitrogens, oxalates, phytates). Refining a grain only removes the bran and leaves the irritant behind.

Clue 03 · Weight gain as defense

Fat is stored energy, and the body stores it when it feels threatened. Chronic stress, including the stress of nutrient-poor or inflammatory food, raises ghrelin and cortisol and signals famine. The body responds by storing energy and dialing down other functions. Seen this way, stubborn weight gain is not a willpower failure. It is a survival response to the wrong inputs.

So the move is simple: remove the inflammatory non-foods, supply nutrient-dense ones, and the body stops bracing for scarcity. It recalibrates its set point, often without deliberate calorie restriction. Eating to comfortable fullness on the right foods does the work willpower cannot.

Animal foods first

The bulk of the plate. Clean, lean meat, organs, eggs, seafood, bone broth, and dairy in moderation. Complete proteins and the cofactor-rich nutrients the body cannot easily get elsewhere. Eat these first at every meal.

A pattern older than the advice against it

This is not new. It mirrors what comparable omnivores eat in the wild (bears and chimpanzees take meat, eggs, fish, fruit, and honey) and what traditional tribal diets centered on. Older traditions echo it too, from Pythagoras and Ayurveda cautioning against legumes to Traditional Chinese Medicine warning that grains produce “dampness.” Read as clues, they converge on animal products and fruit.
