Reflexive Control in the Age of AI
Security threats are often framed as direct attacks. Breaches, exploits, intrusions, and sabotage dominate attention. But Reflexive Control operates differently, because it doesn’t attack systems directly. Instead, it shapes the environment in which decisions are made, allowing targets to act against their own interests while believing they are acting independently.
In many ways, it is the perfect weapon. Well, I think AI dramatically expands the effectiveness of Reflexive Control by inserting itself between reality and decision-makers. We already know that AI can negatively influence the psychologically vulnerable. Imagine that on a scale with millions of people who don’t know any better.
For clarity, Reflexive Control is a strategic concept that describes how adversaries influence an opponent’s choices by manipulating information, perceptions, and assumptions rather than issuing commands or threats. The goal is to structure the decision space so much that the target arrives at a predictable and predetermined conclusion on their own. And this process is much easier than most might appreciate. Just look at Search Engine Algorithmic Conditioning matched with MSM conditioning. With only those, you can convince large populations of complete nonsense with relative ease.
AI systems are ideal intermediaries for this process as well. Organizations increasingly rely on AI to summarize information, assess risk, prioritize options, and generate recommendations. Leaders trust these outputs more than they should, but that’s because they appear data-driven, neutral, and comprehensive. The point that I’m making here is that this trust creates an opportunity for indirect influence at scale. Of course, the key vulnerability is not the AI itself. The vulnerability is that too many assume that AI outputs are objective reflections of reality, rather than products of inputs, training data, and contextual framing.
Think about it. Adversaries no longer need to convince humans directly. They can simply shape the informational environment that AI systems consume. Training data (like the internet) can be poisoned subtly over time. Open-source intelligence feeds can be saturated with selective signals. Narratives can be amplified until they appear statistically dominant. When AI systems are trained in this environment, their outputs shift accordingly.
So, let’s now think about the downstream. Decision-makers then act on AI-generated insights without recognizing that the premises have been engineered. But because of various biases involved, they believe that THEY are the ones making the decision. Contrastive Inquiry would have helped, but even that was largely omitted from their understanding. Of course, we could match this with public education deficiencies here, as well, but I think you get the point.
The scary part is that this form of influence is hard to detect (and defend against) because it doesn’t resemble traditional manipulation. There are no forged documents or obvious falsehoods. The information may actually be factually correct, but it is strategically incomplete. Emphasis, frequency, and framing do the work. Just think about what happens when people believe a partial truth without the context or nuance. Scary stuff.
It seems, at least for now, that AI systems excel at pattern recognition but lack strategic intent. This means they typically cannot (or do not) ask why a pattern exists or who benefits from its interpretation. They might get better at this. Elon Musk seems to have given this some thought. That might be why he mentioned making AI accuracy-focused and highly curious. I guess we’ll see.
Of course, synthetic authority further amplifies the effect. AI-generated reports, assessments, and summaries carry an implicit legitimacy derived from their form. Structured language, confident tone, and analytical formatting create the appearance of rigor. Humans are conditioned to trust outputs that resemble formal analysis, even when underlying assumptions go unexamined. Match this with the idea that the population has been conditioned to blindly trust authority, and the result is a people who blindly accept whatever the AI throws at them.
Let’s bring this back to the beginning. Reflexive Control succeeds when targets believe they are reasoning independently. AI accelerates this by distancing humans from raw information and replacing it with curated interpretations. Leaders believe they are making data-informed decisions, while adversaries quietly shape the data environment upstream.
Of course, the danger isn’t limited to individuals or even national security. Organizations face similar risks. Competitors, activists, or malicious actors can influence market perceptions, compliance decisions, or internal risk assessments by manipulating the informational inputs that AI systems rely upon. And because the influence is indirect, accountability becomes diffuse. No one appears to have made a bad decision. The system simply recommended a course of action. Too easy!
Once organizations internalize AI outputs as authoritative, Reflexive Control becomes scalable. Influence operations that once required sustained human effort can now be automated, personalized, and continuously adjusted. The cost of shaping decision environments drops. The speed increases. Detection lags. Adversaries gain ground… fast! Granted, I might be missing something here, but if I am, I can’t be too far off.
Either way, countering this threat requires recognizing that AI is not merely a tool, but a strategic surface. Those are two very different things. If you can think of AI in that light, you’ll have a chance. But that also means that decision processes have to be designed with the assumption that information environments are contested. Again, Contrastive Inquiry is critical. AI outputs must be interrogated, not accepted at face value. Divergent perspectives must be preserved even when systems converge on a single recommendation. I just don’t think most people are prepared to think this way.
Ready or not, you need to understand that Reflexive Control thrives on outsourced judgment and blurred accountability. AI makes both conditions significantly easier to achieve. Now, I’m not saying that anyone should avoid AI. Not at all. It is an amazing tool, and we are just getting started. Plenty of amazing things still to come. Don’t be afraid, become familiar.
What I am saying is that security in the age of AI depends less on protecting systems and more on protecting reasoning. Reasoned thought is what saves the day. Contrastive Inquiry (which is part of reasoned thinking) is a non-negotiable. Influence does not usually announce itself. It embeds itself in what feels normal, reasonable, and obvious. I’m just saying that AI simply makes that embedding easier. I’m also saying that if you can’t learn to dissect what you’re examining, then anyone (including organizations) that fails to recognize this potential will continue to make confident decisions that serve someone else’s strategy.
