Has it ever occurred to Americans that Christianity may have been weaponized against them? For centuries, the faith that shaped much of Western culture has been invoked as a source of moral strength. Yet today, it is just as often wielded as a tool to keep believers passive in the face of injustice. By misusing scripture (emphasizing endurance and submission over courage and action), Christianity has too often been turned inward against its own adherents. In my opinion, the result is a society where Christians are reluctant to defend their liberties, convinced that their only duty is to wait patiently for the world to come.
I was forced to ponder this after a recent conversation with a Christian friend. We were discussing the state of the world and what could be done to address the challenges ahead. She sighed, dropped her shoulders, and said nothing could be done. I was puzzled. I asked how she could endorse such a thought despite Christianity having a rich history of going to war for moral purposes. Her reply was dismissive, suggesting that God would take care of it.
The resignation struck me as deeply ironic. If this is supposed to be, as she states, “a Christian nation,” then how exactly can a posture of surrender define our civic response? I’ll return to that point shortly, but the exchange truly illustrates how a faith intended to inspire courage has been distorted into a doctrine of passivity. Fortunately, even the Founders seemed to understand this.
A Nation Not Founded as “Christian”
Despite what many might try to argue, America was not founded as a Christian nation. The influence of Deists and Unitarians among the Founders is clear, and Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli stated plainly that the United States “is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” What was foundational was religious freedom, the very opposite of a sectarian state. Yet Christianity has remained a dominant cultural force, and the danger of misuse lies here.
Why? Believers are taught to “turn the other cheek,” endure suffering, and accept persecution with patience. Of course, they are also taught to trust and obey governing authorities (Romans 13:1–2). Yet, if you give that any real thought, such teachings stand in stark contrast to the convictions of our Founding Fathers, which is just more evidence of the point.
While these lessons may serve personal humility, they actually become highly destructive when applied to civic life. When Christians fail to resist encroachments on liberty, tyranny advances unopposed. If you want proof, then just look around. If this is to be corrected, it will be up to us. As Ben Franklin put it bluntly, “God helps those who help themselves.” Of course, the Bible supports the position by calling for defense of the innocent (Proverbs 31:8–9), protection of the weak (Psalm 82:3–4), and justice for the oppressed (Isaiah 1:17). Yet, if you notice, these calls are too often drowned out by a narrative of passive endurance, but that only benefits oppressors, not believers.
Christianity and the Fracture of Conservatism
This weaponization of faith has also contributed to division within conservatism. Too often, conservatism is presented as synonymous with “traditional Christian values.” But this is misleading and harmful. Not all conservatives are Christian, and not all Christians are conservative. Conservatism is about liberty, not religion.
Similarly, there are homosexual and trans conservatives, highly educated conservatives, and traditional families, which are all united by the principle of limited government and personal liberty. The point is that when Christianity becomes the litmus test for conservatism, it alienates those who do not fit the religious mold. This is not accidental. From what I can tell, it is a deliberate tactic of division, encouraged by political parties that profit from polarization. Conservatism should be understood as a philosophy of liberty, rather than a test of religious purity.
Moreover, conservatives must be acutely aware of how cultural conditioning shapes outcomes. People are taught how to treat one another, their institutions, and their own country. For decades, children have been trained to hate their heritage, despise their institutions, self-segregate, and reject shared values. Is it any wonder that school shootings, once rare, have multiplied? Is it surprising that national division has only deepened?
Sure, we can all admit that this is not spontaneous decay. It is the calculated result of ideological subversion. As it turns out, Marxist methods of destabilization deliberately target faith, family, and national identity, hollowing them out until people lose both confidence and cohesion. In fact, the Manifesto and Engels’s 1847 draft name the three targets specifically. And yes, I often write about this, and I will keep reiterating it in different ways until people grasp the true scale of the threat, because most simply do not understand how serious it is.
Final Thoughts
The point is that the weaponization of Christianity is not about faith itself but about how it has been twisted to produce passivity, division, and self-destruction. By confusing endurance with submission, conservatism with religion, and diversity with division, America has been weakened from within. I truly believe this was done on purpose, and the evidence sure seems to support that perspective.
Of course, that does not mean the way forward is to abandon faith. Far from it. I have many Christian patriot friends, and I am glad they have their faith. I believe they are stronger for it. However, what I am saying is that patriotic Christians must reclaim it in its proper place: as a source of courage, responsibility, and defense of liberty. On the other hand, conservatism must also be reclaimed, but not as a partisan brand or a religious test. It must be reclaimed as a broad commitment to freedom that unites rather than divides. This begins by understanding that a Conservative and a Republican are not necessarily the same. For example, I am a Conservative. However, I am not a Republican.
Look, if we allow our beliefs to continue being weaponized against us, we will remain a society trained to hate itself, unprepared to defend liberty, and powerless to resist subversion. None of us (regardless of flag) truly wants that. If, however, we begin questioning these distortions, if patriots stand together despite their differences, and if we rediscover both faith and freedom rightly understood, then the trajectory can still be reversed. But that reversal will not come without cost.
God may choose to help save this country. That would be great if he does. But if God truly helps those who help themselves, then perhaps His help will only come once we find the courage to finally stand. Either way, one thing is certain: there is little hope in sitting idle and trusting unworthy governing authorities to fix what they themselves have broken or fostered. And since this post discusses religious themes, I will leave you with an interesting scripture to consider:
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11)
